Alexander G. Herman Alexander George Herman, 96, of 801 Alborn Ave. passed away the afternoon of Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2019, at his residence.
Mr. Herman was born Aug. 20, 1922, in New Castle. He was a son of the late John and Mary Bedek Herman.
He was married to Olga Proch. They were married June 18, 1949, and were married for 69 years. She preceded him in death Oct. 24, 2018.
Alexander was a member of the Northminster Presbyterian Church.
He was a graduate of New Castle High School, class of 1940.
Following graduation, Alexander enlisted in the Army on Dec. 16, 1942, and served with the 975th Field Artillery Battalion as gun crewman medium artillery. Alexander held the rank of Private First Class and was active with numerous campaigns, GO 33 and 40 WD 45, Normandy No France Rhineland Central Europe. He received the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Service Medal, EAME Service Medal with Four Bronze Stars and Victory Medal for his service to his country. Alexander was honorably discharged on Dec. 1, 1945.
Mr. Herman worked at the former Mooney Brothers in New Castle. He retired from the former Rockwell International Company in New Castle.
Alexander enjoyed woodworking and fishing with his family and friends. He also enjoyed working on cars and trucks with his son, Larry.
Alexander is survived by a son, Larry (Fern) Herman of New Castle; son-in-law, Michael Kelly of New Castle; four grandchildren, Tonya Herman, Larry Herman Jr., Mandee Rozel and Megan Kelly-Beaury; four great-grandchildren, Nya, Jaylyn, Chandler and James; three stepgreat-granddaughters, Mariah, Ashley and Kemberly; and a stepgreat-great-granddaughter, Kasey Woodall.
In addition to his parents and wife, Olga, he was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Michael Herman; two sisters, Caroline Herman and Agnes Moses; and his daughter, Marcia Kelly.
Calling hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Noga Funeral Home Inc., 1142 S. Mill St., New Castle. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will conduct Military Honors prior to the Friday evening service at the funeral home.
A funeral service will be held immediately following visitation at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Pastor Jordan Rimmer of Northminster Presbyterian Church will officiate.
Burial will be at Parkside Cemetery.
