Alpena Zazanis, 86, peacefully passed away on July 10, 2019.
She was born on Oct. 1, 1932, in Youngstown, Ohio.
She was preceded in death by her loving parents, Athanaseos (Tom) and Stavroula (Laura) Zazanis; her brother, Dr. George Zazanis, and her brother-in-law, Arthur Nicholas.
She is survived by her sister, Bess Nicholas; her sister-in-law, Marina Zazanis; her nieces, Niki Stephanie Nicholas and Elena Zazanis, and her nephews, Arthur and Thomas Nicholas.
Alpena graduated from New Castle High School and Indiana State Teachers College in Indiana, Pennsylvania.
She taught second grade for many years at Lockley Elementary School, New Castle. She retired after 31 years of service.
In addition to teaching, she believed that it was important to participate in her community and church. She was a member of the parish council of St. George Greek Orthodox Church and also served as a council secretary. Alpena was a member and a past president of the church ladies auxiliary and the Philoptochos Society.
Her civic activities included the Beautification Committee of the Greater New Castle Chamber of Commerce and the St. Francis Hospital Women's Auxiliary.
Alpena loved to spend her summers in Greece by the seashore.
She gave up participating in activities to care for her mother for many years.
She will be missed by her family and friends.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 19, 2019, at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 315 W. Englewood Ave., New Castle with the Rev. Michael officiating.
Interment will follow immediately at Graceland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her name may be made to St. George Greek Orthodox Church or the donor's favorite charity.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Noga Funeral Home Inc. 1142 S. Mill St., New Castle.

Miss Zazanis was my 2nd grade teacher back in 1958. She was a very precise teacher and I have always remembered her when I think of my grade school at Lockley.
