Anthony G. Rizzo, 90, of New Castle passed away peacefully the morning of Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2017, at Avalon Nursing Home.
Mr. Rizzo was born on Nov. 24, 1926, in New Castle, a son of the late Antonio and Teresa Cortez Rizzo.
Tony enlisted in the Navy in 1944 and served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He was honorably discharged as a Seaman first class in 1946.
He was employed by CSX Railroad for more than 35 years and worked as a brakeman until his retirement in 1982.
Tony was of the Catholic faith.
He was an award-winning, self-taught artist with several of his pieces being published in print, and others put on display. Tony expressed his art through various mediums, including but not limited to, painting, sculpting, photography and carving.
His wife, the former Eileen D. Brogan, whom he married on Sept. 30, 1972, preceded him death on Jan. 31, 2016.
Surviving are a stepdaughter, Cheryl Pierog and her husband, Art, of Mt. Jackson; four stepsons, Martin Buckel and his wife, Debra, of West Farmington, Ohio, Jeffrey Buckel of Brimfield, Massachusetts, and Gary Buckel and William Buckel, both of New Castle; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, Tony was preceded in death by four sisters, Ann Rizzo, Rose Rizzo, Angie Augostine and Mary Davelli; and a brother, Ben Rizzo.
In keeping with Tony's wishes, there will be no calling hours.
Entombment will be in Castle View Memorial Gardens.
