Charles Mathieson Jr., 86, of New Castle passed away the evening of Monday, Dec. 18, 2017, at Golden Hill Nursing Home.
Charles was born Dec. 16, 1931, in Volant. He was a son of the late Charles and Helen Serwatka Mathieson Sr.
Charles married the former Violet R. Zoltani. She survives at home. They were married for 61 years.
Mr. Mathieson was Methodist and a member of the Independent Methodist Church.
Mr. Mathieson enlisted in the Marine Corps on Dec. 8, 1952, in Pittsburgh; he served his country during the Korean War. Mr. Mathieson received many decorations and citations, among them where the National Defense Service Medal, Navy Occupation Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Charles earned the rank of private first class. He was honorably discharged from active duty on Dec. 7, 1955, at Quantico, Virginia.
Charles retired after 38 years of service working as a fabricator at Saw Hill Tube in Wheatland.
He was member of the VFW Post 6345 in Mercer.
Mr. Mathieson enjoyed deer hunting and raising his beagles for rabbit hunting.
He was a big Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Pirates fan.
In addition to his wife, Violet, Charles is survived by a brother, James (Sonny) Mathieson of Mercer; three sisters, Dorothy Worek, Joan McCandless and Carol Gordon, all of New Castle; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Mathieson was preceded in death by his parents and four sisters, Marie Mielcarek, Betty Grimm, Jean Gurgacz and Martha Jane Stanley.
A graveside service was held on Dec. 21, 2017. The Rev. Fredrick Gilbert, pastor of Independent Methodist Church, officiated. Burial was in Graceland Cemetery Veterans Section.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
The family is asking that memorial contributions be made in his name to Independent Methodist Church, 1921 New Butler Road, New Castle, PA 16101.
