Clifford's Story

Clifford Barkley Mathieson, 95, of Hermitage, Pa., formerly of Grove City and Erie, passed away at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital on Thursday evening, Jan. 11, 2018.
He was born on March 4, 1922, in Springfield Township, Mercer County, Pa., to John Barkley Mathieson and Elva Katheryn Mathieson.
He married Eleanor Louise Marshall on Jan. 30, 1941, who passed away in May 2010.
Cliff graduated from Grove City High School in 1939 and later served honorably in the U.S. Navy as a Radarman, 3rd Class, in the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II.
He was employed intermittently at The Cooper Bessemer, later called Cooper Energy, in Grove City from 1940 until 1966 with time out for military service and also at United Engineering and Urick Foundry until his retirement 1984.
He was a member for over 60 years F&AM Lodge 603 in Grove City.
He was an avid hunter, loved to fish, had a boat with his brother-in-law George Robinson, and the two went out often on Lake Erie to fish for walleye and perch.
He was a consummate gentleman, always unselfishly helping others at the Whispering Oaks Independent Living facility, where he has recently resided until his death. He was very caring and considerate of others with many residents of the facility, greatly appreciating the opportunity to have met Cliff.
A very special friend, companion and also a resident of Whispering Oaks, Nina Nigro and Cliff spent many of their days together. They enjoyed visiting their local families to share holiday dinners and festivities.
He was a member Hickory United Methodist Church in Hermitage and former member the Lakewood United Methodist Church in Erie.
Surviving is a daughter, Judi Lynne Goodwin of Vacaville, California; grandsons, Dean Goodwin and Jim Barber, both from California, and Chris Goodwin from South Carolina; his two great-grandsons, Curtis and Taylor from South Carolina; his sister, Bernice Green of Hermitage; nieces, Kathy Bonnette (Michael), Nancy Elford (Martin), Shirley Fruit (Thomas), Beverly Nespor (Bruce) and Carol Mathieson; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, the former Eleanor Marshall, and brothers, David Lee and Harold Arthur Mathieson.
Family will receive friends at the Smith Funeral Home (Village of Leesburg), 1778 Perry Highway, Volant, Pa. on Thursday, Jan. 18 from 4 until 7 p.m. with a Masonic Service at 7p.m. Funeral services will be at the Smith Funeral Home in Leesburg on Friday, Jan. 19, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Frank Hodges of Hickory United Methodist Church officiating.
There will also be a visitation time at the funeral home on Friday from 10 a.m. until service at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Crestview Memorial Park, Grove City, Pa.
