Dale's Story

Dale R. Johnston, 77, of West Pittsburg passed away the afternoon of Nov. 24, 2017, at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital.
Born on May 17, 1940, in New Castle, he was the son of the late Lucius and Ila Mielke Johnston.
Surviving at home is his beloved wife of 37 years, the former Claudia Wagner, whom he married on Oct. 4, 1980.
Dale had worked as a quality control inspector for National Castings in Sharon, Pa. He retired as a security guard for Essroc. He also served his country as a member of the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era. Dale enjoyed watching football, but his greatest joy came from spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Dale is survived by his children, Janis Holl of New Castle, Gale Johnston of West Pittsburg, Charles Gwin Jr. of Fowler, Ohio, and Melanie Keller and husband Andy of New Castle; brother, Matt Shoaff of Orlando, Fla.; sisters, Lois Shippley of New Castle, Lana Stephens of Dublin, Ohio, and Judy Kadunce of Arnold, Pa.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Dale is preceded in death by his sisters, Patty Heaney and Bonnie Shoaff, and brother, Eugene Johnston.
Visitation will be held Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory, 941 S. Mill St. Services will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, officiated by Rev. Dennis Bupp. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will conduct military rites Wednesday at the funeral home.
Interment will take place in Parkside Cemetery.
