Donald R. 'Bugsy' Baird, 89, of Bessemer passed away on Friday, July 28, 2017, at UPMC Jameson Hospital from complications.
Bugsy was born in North Beaver Township, just outside of Bessemer, on Nov. 16, 1927, a son of the late William and Edna Snyder Baird.
Bugsy spent his whole life in Bessemer, attending high school, working as a welder for the Bessemer Cement Company and serving as the borough constable for many years.
He built his home on the "Hill," along with his wife, the former Phyllis Anderson, whom he married May 2, 1948, and together they raised their two children.
Bugsy was an avid and dedicated outdoorsman and amateur archeologist, He enjoyed all hunting and fishing activities and was a member of several hunting clubs, such as Mahoning Sportsman Club, Bessemer Coon and Fox Club and Bessemer Rod and Gun Club.
His social activities included membership in the Croatian Club and Johnson Club and the Archeologist Society of Boardman, Ohio. Bugsy enjoy searching for wild mushrooms, ginseng and arrowheads.
Bugsy was a loving husband, father and grandfather and friend.
He leaves behind his wife, Phyllis; daughter and son-in-law, Kristen and Mike Crist; a daughter-in-law, Shirley Baird; five grandchildren, Samantha McDanel and her husband, Cody, Bylon Hemsky and husband, Joe, Zachary Crist, and Brittanee and Kailee Trott; and eight great-grandchildren.
Bugsy was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Kerby Baird; and a brother, William Baird
A service will be scheduled at a future date and the family thanks all for their thoughts and prayers.
