Donald E. Thompson
Donald E. Thompson, 81, of Mercer went to be with his Lord and Savior Thursday morning, Sept. 12, 2019, with his loving wife at his side, following an extended illness.
Don was born in Mercer on Sept.4, 1938, to Dallas and Merle Mae (Wright) Thompson.
Don was a 1956 graduate of Mercer High School.
He was a journeyman wood pattern maker retiring form Cooper Energy Services with 44 years of service.
Don was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church for 68 years, where he served as a former elder, trustee and usher.
He was a veteran of the PA National Guard Reserves.
Don really enjoyed woodworking, gardening and outside work. He like watching sports, especially the Pittsburgh Steelers. He enjoyed golfing with his cousin, Jack. He also enjoyed playing cards and games with special friends. Don and his wife used to enjoy square dancing.
Don is survived by his wife, Rita Guarnieri Thompson, whom he married Nov. 5, 1966. They had 52 wonderful years together.
He is also survived by his sister, Sandra (John) Cwynar in Orchard Park, New York, and several wonderful nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Harrison and Janet Walters; and two brothers, Clint and Ray Thompson.
A special thanks for the many blessings Don received from the nurses at St. Paul's and his neighbors.
Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, 2019, at Bethany Presbyterian Church, 100 W. Venango St., Mercer, in the Carson Chapel.
A memorial service will follow immediately at 11 a.m. in the sanctuary at Bethany Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Peter Dembroski officiating and Sue Allen assisting.
Memorial contributions may be made to Bethany Presbyterian Church, 100 W. Venango St., Mercer, Pa. 16137, or Mercer Area Public Library, 143 N. Pitt St., Mercer, Pa. 16137.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Cunningham Funeral Home Inc., 144 S. Pitt St., Mercer, Pa. 16137.
