Douglas S. McCombs
Douglas S. McCombs, 66, of Volant died at home on Monday, Sept 16, 2019, after a brief battle with cancer.
Doug was born in Greenville on Jan. 21, 1953, to J. Duncan McCombs and June Winslow McCombs.
He grew up in Girard, Ohio and graduated from Liberty High School in 1971.
He enlisted in the Air Force Reserves and served six years at the Vienna Air Base.
When he returned from his training in the Air Force, he began his career as a truck mechanic, working at Armbrecht Motors, Avis Truck Rental and Ryder Truck Rental.
Doug married Patricia J. Bell on Sept. 20, 1975.
He began working for New Castle Battery in 1978 and moved to New Wilmington in 1980. Over the years he was employed in various other truck fleet maintenance operations, including Verizon through Swartz Repair. He retired in December 2018 from Glenn O. Hawbaker Inc. in Grove City.
Doug was a member of White Chapel United Methodist Church, where he served in various positions.
In his lifetime, Doug collected many things, most notably dogs and Plymouth muscle cars. He loved everything motorized on the ground and in the air. For several years he held a private pilot's license and flew out of Grove City and New Castle airports.
He was in awe of the great engineering feats of the world and wanted to see them all. He ended most evenings by going outside and surveying the vastness of the universe. He was a proud patriot and only wanted the best for his country.
Doug is survived by his wife at home; his mother, June McCombs of Niles, Ohio; two brothers and their wives, Lee W. and Marlene McCombs of North East, Pennsylvania, and William D. and Marci McCombs of Canfield, Ohio; two sisters-in-law, Deb (Aaron) Stanley of Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Susan Krobusek of Farmington, New York; five nephews and nieces; and seven great-nephews and great-nieces.
Friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept 20, 2019, at the Smith Funeral Home, 310 W. Neshannock Ave., New Wilmington.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept 21, 2019, at White Chapel United Methodist Church, 415 New Castle-Mercer Road, New Wilmington. The Rev. Jodie Smith, former pastor of the church, officiating.
Interment will follow at White Chapel Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to White Chapel Church or an animal shelter of the donor's choice.

To have known Doug McCombs was to like him and find yourself smiling or laughing whether engaging in conversation with him directly or listening as part of the group! Also, you would learn something -- frequently about cars or planes --and be better for the knowledge you've gained! He has been a treasured Cousin -- we will miss him greatly. I have fond memories of Doug when he worked at New Castle battery.
He was a great mechanic and always had a kind word for everyone. Please except our condolences, Patty.
