Elma F. "Grammy" Porter, 91, of Bessemer passed away peacefully the evening of Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2018.
Born in Bessemer on May 3, 1926, she was a daughter of Milan and Frances Puz Ferlan.
She was married to the love of her life, Kenneth B. Porter Sr. for 35 years. He preceded her in death on May 9, 1979.
A lifelong resident of Bessemer, Grammy was a hard-working, selfless, giving person, who found the most pleasure in caring for others.
She began working at the Metropolitan Bessemer Brick Company during World War II and continued through 1962. After that, she worked at the Bessemer Post Office and the borough building, as a waitress at the Bessemer Croatian Club and as a cook at Tiger's Table Restaurant.
She volunteered for the New Castle Regional Ballet, assisting behind the scenes wherever she could, and enjoyed watching the dancers for more than 22 years, never missing a Nutcracker performance.
Grammy was known as a phenomenal baker, especially for her delicious cookies. She crocheted hundreds of afghans and dishcloths, which are enjoyed in many homes each and every day.
Polka music got her feet moving every time she heard it. She particularly loved going to listen to Mikey D. perform with his live polka band.
Survivors include a son, Kenneth B. (Sharon) Porter Jr. of Bessemer; two granddaughters, Lorree (Alan) Houk of Bessemer and Lee Ann (Bob) Deemer of Inverness, Florida; two great-grandchildren, Evan Houk of Bessemer and Elissa Houk (Stephen) Cowher of North Beaver; a brother, Kenneth (Rita) Ferlan of Bessemer; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a sister, Olga Polyack; and two brothers, Milan Ferlan Jr. and Jim Ferlan.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Church of Genesis, 303 N. Cedar St., New Castle.
A memorial service will take place immediately following visitation at 5 p.m. at the church with the Rev. Ron Eade officiating.
Burial will be in Bessemer First Covenant Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family is requesting that memorial contributions be made in Grammy's name to the New Castle Regional Ballet, 210 W. Washington St., New Castle, PA 16101.
