Ernest DeCarlo

On Tuesday, April 9, 2019, Ernest DeCarlo, age 73, passed away and went to see all of his loved ones who have gone before him.
Ernie was known for his dramatic storytelling and ability to make everyone around him laugh hysterically and smile. To his very last days, he had a very quick wit and ability to stretch out a story with every detail and funny moment.
He was truly one of a kind and will be missed by all who knew him. Ernie was born in New Castle in 1945 to an Italian construction family who knew the value of hard work and perseverance. At a very young age, Ernie was working with his father, Moe, in construction and that would carry on with his 30-year career with Greggo & Ferrara Construction in Delaware.
At a young age, Ernie was also introduced to his lifelong passion - stock car racing. He raced at Hickory Speedway and worked on pit crews in his early years and was a diehard race fan who watched NASCAR every weekend. It was a sport he truly loved.
Ernie was also a man with musical talent who played the drums for the rock band The Jaguars with Eddie D., Bert D. and Eddie P. where he had his 15 minutes of fame on the TV show "Come Alive" in Pittsburgh.
Ernie was a true family man who always wanted large groups of people around, surrounded by food, family and lots of loud talking. In his final years, "Gramps" spirits were lifted anytime his great-grandchildren visited or entered the conversation. His family and wife, Donna, were his greatest loves.
Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, Dominick "Moe" DeCarlo and Stella (Casciato) DeCarlo; and his sister Yvonne (DeCarlo) Otlowski.
Ernie is survived by his wife of 55 years, Donna (Llewellyn) DeCarlo; sons, Ernie DeCarlo (Liz), Alan DeCarlo (Donna) and Jeff DeCarlo (Dottie); and sister, Beverly Syed (Sajid); grandchildren, Matthew DeCarlo (Jaclyn), AJ DeCarlo (Jessica), and Jason Johns; as well as nephew, Amir Syed; and by the light of his last few years of his life, his great-grandchildren, Gabriella, Matthew, Jackson, and Brayden.
Family and friends are invited to Ernie's viewing from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 16 at Strano-Feeley Funeral Home, 635 Churchmans Road, Newark, DE 19702. The service will follow at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family is asking that a donation be made in his honor to the Delaware Valley Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association at For directions or to send an online condolence visit
