Geraldine (Geri) Lorena Sewell Burns, 95, passed quietly in her sleep in the early hours of Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2017.
Geraldine was born to Orin and Mary Whitney Sewell on Oct. 23, 1922.
She is survived by her husband of 73 years, Joseph Anderson Burns of Mercer. Together, she and Joseph had five children, Joseph Anthony Burns, (Natalie), Mary Sewell Burns Holmes (Peter), Michael Sewell Burns (Pam), Daniel Orrin Burns (Deborah), and Robert Sewell Burns (Dorothy). She is also survived by nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She deeply loved her family and prayed for each one daily.
Geraldine was a teacher for the disabled, graduating from both Upper Iowa University and Slippery Rock College with honors.
She was a member of the Bethany Presbyterian Church in Mercer.
Geraldine was a skilled quilter and seamstress, and made quilts for all of her children and grandchildren.
She worked with young mothers to help them adjust to the challenges of parenting, and was active in many prayer groups.
Geraldine was extremely bright, kind, humble, stable, forgiving, loving and lovable. She loved the beauty of nature and the splendor of color. She will be endlessly cherished as her influence lives on.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
