Harry's Story

Lifelong Bessemer resident, 88-year-old Harry K. Vantassel passed away the evening of May 9, 2017, at UPMC Jameson in New Castle. Harry was born on July 6, 1928, the son of Ray and Elizabeth (Edeburn) Vantassel.
He completed his education in the Bessemer school system, served his country as an Army veteran during the Korean War. He married the former Betty Stivens on Nov. 4, 1950, and raised three children.
Harry retired from the Bessemer Cement Co. after holding the position of No. 1 Kiln Burner. Harry was not a man of idle hands. He also worked for McCurley Electric, was an independent truck driver, raised and sold sweet corn, and in the spring, plowed all the gardens in Bessemer. He was a member of the Bessemer Presbyterian Church, Bessemer Croatian Club and the American Legion Earl J. Watt Post.
Throughout Harry's life he had a passion for tractors and motorcycles, especially Allis-Chalmers and Indians. Small enjoyments where also a big part of his life breakfast at the "Club," trips to the camp in the mountains, grandchildren and great-grandchildren's baseball games, and hunting.
Harry is survived by daughter, Susan (Don) McConnell of Boardman, Ohio; daughter, Bonnie Mars of Edinburg, Pa.; son, Art Vantassel of Bessemer, Pa.; brother, Frank (Ginger) Vantassel of Durango, Colo.; four grandchildren, Amy McConnell of New Castle, Joshua Mollenkopf of Enon Valley, Pa., Jeremy Mollenkopf of Canfield, Ohio, and Arlynn Vantassel of Pulaski, Pa.; five great-grandchildren, Jordan Mollenkopf, Peyton Mollenkopf, Lucas McConnell, Milana Mollenkopf and Minka Mollenkopf.
Visitation will be at the Terry A. Cunningham Funeral Home, 203 Oak St., Bessemer, on Saturday, May 13, 2017, from 5 to 8 p.m.
A service in Honor of Harry's life will be held at the funeral home Sunday, May 14, at 2 p.m. The Rev. Nathan Leslie will officiate. Harry will be laid to rest in the Bessemer Cemetery.
