Irene Fay Stunkard, 84, of Fombell, Pa., passed away the night of Nov. 30, 2017, at Butler Memorial Hospital.
Born Aug. 31, 1933, in New Castle, she was the daughter of Wardell and Elizabeth Krepps Dexter.
She was preceded in death on Dec. 29, 1999, by her husband of 48 years, Robert H. Stunkard, whom she married Aug. 28, 1951.
A graduate of Union High School, Irene was a cashier with Kroger for several years. She later was in charge of the linens used at The Tavern in New Wilmington.
An avid Pittsburgh sports enthusiast, she loved the Steelers, Penguins and the Pirates. She also was a NASCAR fan, especially Jeff Gordon. Irene loved spending time with all her grandchildren.
She was a member of Providence Baptist Church in Ellwood City.
She is survived by her daughter, with whom she made her home, Susan (Gerald) Goehring of Fombell; three sons, Robert Stunkard of New Castle, Scott (Veronica) Stunkard of Woodland Park, Colo., and Brian (Cynthia) Stunkard of Kutztown, Pa.; three sisters, Shirley Peterson of Mingo Junction, Ohio, Virginia (Ginger) VanTassel of Durango, Colo., and Elizabeth (Betty) Hofmeister of Smith Mountain Lake, Va.; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Lee Dexter and Kenneth Dexter, and one grandson, Steven Stunkard.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle.
A funeral service will take place on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Calvin Cummings officiating.
Burial will be in Castle View Memorial Gardens.
