J.R. 'Pat''s Story
J.R. "Pat" Patterson, 94, of Volant passed away the morning of Wednesday, April 26, 2017, at the Veterans Administration Community Living Center in Butler.
Pat was born in New Castle on March 9, 1923, to the late George and Wilda Walls Patterson.
He married Josephine Johns Patterson on Oct. 28, 1983.
Pat served his country in the Army during World War II in the 474th automatic weapon half track outfit, landing on Utah Beach on D-Day, and participating in the Battle of the Bulge.
Pat began his career working for Jack Gerson's Jewelry Store in the photo department. He eventually opened his own business, known at Pat's Camera Store, in downtown New Castle. Retirement was not part of his vocabulary. Opening Pat's Camera Cottage overlooking the Neshannock Creek near Volant was his idea of retirement.
He enjoyed writing the column "Camera Chatter" for the Bargain Bulletin, as well as letters to the editor in The New Castle News.
Survivors include his wife, Josephine, of the residence; his family, George R. Patterson of Denver, Colorado, Richard R. Patterson of New Castle, Kimberly (John) Kerins of Hermitage, Carla R. (John) Bigler of Lexington, Kentucky, Steven R. Patterson of Fort Pierce, Florida, Lee Etta (Ron) Proudfoot of Pulaski, Merri Lynn (David) Drespling of New Castle and Kathy Ann (Paul) Parsons of Salt Lake City, Utah; six grandchildren, Katie Patterson, Josh (Jesse) Drespling, and Rona, Luke and Jenna Proudfoot; and four great-grandchildren.
A son, David R. Patterson, preceded Pat in death.
Friends will be received from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Smith Funeral Home, 310 W. Neshannock Ave., New Wilmington.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home where full military honors will be given. Pastor David L. Drespling of Victory Christian Center will officiate.
Interment will be at Oak Park Cemetery, New Castle.
