James "Sonny" Johns Jr., 76, of Davidsville, Pennsylvania, formerly of New Jersey and New Castle, died on Saturday, March 25, 2017, at his home.
Born on Nov. 17, 1940, in New Castle, he was a son of James Sr. and Anna (Esper) Johns.
He was preceded in death by his parents and stepmother, Gladys Johns.
He is survived by loving wife and best friend, Crystal (Tietsworth) Johns; his children James A. Johns and his wife, Traci, of Indian Trail, North Carolina, Ruby married to Ryan Broughton of Port Norris, New Jersey, Holly Neill and her companion, Jemel Goolsby, of Johnstown and Jeffrey Neill of Davidsville; his grandchildren, Brooke and Rylee Johns, Lauryn Broughton, Erik Wynder and Jason and Drew Neill; his sister, Louise Dout-Peri, and his niece, Beth Dout, both of East Lake, Ohio; his aunts, Freida (Johns) married to Tom Rohan of Youngstown, Ohio, Martha (Johns) Jacobs of New Castle and Lilian (Johns) Pelom of Durham, North Carolina; his special cousin, Bill Esper and wife, Donna, of Butler; and numerous other Esper and Johns family members.
He was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War where he served as a Navy SEAL.
He worked in research and development for Johnson & Johnson Co. in New Jersey for 23 years. Following his retirement there, he then provided armed prisoner transport and armed security in New Jersey until his second retirement at age 71.
He was an avid fisherman and spent many happy hours alone or with others doing what he loved most.
A private memorial service will be held.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to your local humane society in James' memory.
