James E. Wherry, 79, of Neshannock Township passed away the evening of Friday, Aug. 11, 2017, at Jameson Care Center.
Born Oct. 6, 1937, in Pittsburgh, he was a son of Joseph E. and Margaret Ralston Wherry.
Surviving at home is his wife of 56 years, C. Elaine McCarthy Wherry, whom he married Oct. 1, 1960.
Mr. Wherry was a graduate of Penn Hills High School and a 1957 graduate of Grove City College.
He was an accountant at American Bridge, a controller with Pennsylvania Engineering, where he received the Boss of the Year Award, and retired from Lockley Machine as vice president.
Throughout his lifetime, James served as the treasurer of several associations, including Boy Scouts, Lawrence Club, Blind Association, American Red Cross, United Way, and New Castle Lions, where he also was the former president.
He held membership with the North Hills Boosters and the New Castle Country Club, and was involved with the Habitat for Humanity. He enjoyed coaching Little League in previous years, and also was the recipient of the Salute to Courage award.
James served in the Army.
Prior to his membership at Northminster Presbyterian Church, he was member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as trustee.
Among his other interests, he enjoyed golf, tennis, bicycling, travel and reading about history. Most important to him was the times he spent with his family.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons and their wives, Jeffrey E. (Diane) Wherry of Cranberry Township and Michael T. (Shelby L.) Wherry of Pittsburgh; a sister and brother-in-law, Sue and Todd Alexander of New Castle; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Terry and Jill McCarthy; and five grandchildren, Alyssa, Rachel, Jonathan, Patrick and Nicholas Wherry.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be held 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory Inc. 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle.
A funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. William King and Rev. Andrew Jillson officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Northminster Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, Habitat for Humanity in New Castle or the Boys Scouts of America Moraine Trails Council.
