Jane R. Bates, 96, of North Mercer Street passed away the morning of Oct. 18, 2017, at Jameson Care Center.
Born Oct. 8, 1921, in New Castle, she was the daughter of Russell P. and Sara Zetta Jenkins Rhodes.
She was preceded in death on Nov.12, 1998, by her husband of 55 years, Willis H. Bates, whom she married Aug. 29, 1943.
After graduation in 1939 from New Castle High School, Jane attended New Castle Business College.
In 1964 Jane was both the secretary and the financial secretary for Epworth United Methodist Church. She resigned her position as secretary in 1981 and continued as financial secretary until 1991.
Jane was also the owner of Bates Tree Farm in Perry Township.
She was a Den Mother with Cub Scouts and a member of United Methodist Women. Among her many interests, she liked to cook, sew, play solitaire, watch golf on television, sing and whistle.
An active member of Epworth United Methodist Church, she was a Sunday school teacher. Because of her beautiful soprano voice, she enjoyed singing in the church choir.
She is survived by one son, Richard Bates of Fombell, Pa.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Martin Bates, and one brother, Richard C. Rhodes.
Visitation will be held on Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle.
A funeral service will immediately follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Wayne Schar officiating.
Burial will be in Castle View Gardens.
