John Ediburn  Hutchison Sr.


John Ediburn Hutchison Sr., 85, of Wilmington Township, Lawrence County, passed away the morning of Aug. 7, 2019.
John was born in New Castle on March 2, 1934, to Harold and Ethel Bartholomew Hutchison.
On June 16, 1953, John married the love of his life, Wilma Aiken, who survives.
He graduated from New Castle High School.
He enlisted in the Army during the Korean War, serving in the 553rd Field Artillery battalion that developed and deployed the Atomic Cannon.
After his service, John worked at the Youngstown Sheet and Tube and other various jobs while earning his electrical engineering degree from Youngstown University. He joined Penn Power in 1962 and retired as general planning engineer in 1994.
He was past chairman of the Pennsylvania Electric Association Planning Committee.
John was a devoted husband, a model father, a compassionate grandfather and an earnest believer in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
He held various positions through the years at Highland Heights United Brethren Church and Wayside Emmanuel Church, including chairman of the board, treasurer, elder, lay leader and Sunday school teacher and superintendent.
He also was a Gideon, holding the office of vice-president and president of the New Castle chapter.
Besides his wife, John is survived by his children, Dr. John (Minerva) Hutchison Jr., of Bristol, Tennessee, Judy (Clair) Caldwell of Zelienople, Bill Hutchison of Troutman, North Carolina, Mark (Tami) Hutchison of Pocatello, Idaho, Tom Hutchison of Volant and Tammy (George) Coon of Franklin; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers and a sister, Harold (Nancy) Hutchison, Frank (Karen) Hutchison and Elizabeth (Richard) Parry, all of New Castle.
He was preceded in death by five sisters, Ilene Bower, Lois Arkwright, June Reiber, Mary Spiker and Ethel Dressel.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9, 2019, at the Smith Funeral Home, 310 W. Neshannock Ave., New Wilmington. There will be an additional visitation from 10 a.m. until the funeral service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2019. Pastor Bryan Warner of Wayside Emmanuel Church will officiate.
Interment will follow at Fair Oaks Cemetery.
