John Charles Sager, 75, of Sharpsville passed away at 2:51 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, 2017, after a long and courageous battle with lung disease. For the last few months he had been under the care of hospice with a lung cancer diagnosis.
John was born on Aug. 12, 1942, in Sharon, Pa., to Donald Urmson Sager and Florabell (Brenneman) Sager.
He was a 1961 graduate of Sharpsville High School. After graduation, he joined the United States Navy. John also served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves until he was honorably discharged due to poor health. John was proud of his military service and would entertain with his sailor stories.
John loved to work and left his children with a faithful work ethic. He was a laborer who worked at local steel mills until their closings. His favorite employment was that of being a truck driver. Due to poor health, he retired from BeeLine Trucking in 1991.
John was a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church of Sharpsville. He attended church regularly even when it was difficult. His love of cooking was appreciated by his church family, especially his homemade vegetable soup and chocolate chip cookies. There was mutual love between John and FPC Sharpsville's church family. During the last six months, their prayers and care encouraged him.
John leaves two daughters, Marlana (Randy) Rogers of Georgetown, Texas, and Elizabeth Varsho (Randy Damron) Granger, Texas; two sons, William (Joan) Sager of Pace, Fla., and Donald (Melissa) Sager of Sharpsville; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. John is also survived by a brother-in-law, Bill Schuster, and many loving nieces and nephews.
On July 11, 1985, he married the former Sandra Grandy, who survives at home.
John was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Barbara Hartshorn and Patricia Schuster; a son, Chad Edward; a niece, Sherrie Minto and her husband Robert Minto; and brother-in-law, Gus Grandy.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 9, 2017, at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Sharpsville, Sharpsville, Pa., with Pastor Mike Carlin, officiating.
Burial will take place in Riverside Cemetery.
