Joseph J. Nickum, 89, formerly of 970 Cleland Mill Road, passed away the evening of April 27, 2017, at UPMC Jameson Hospital.
Joseph was born April 29, 1927, in New Castle. He was the son of the late Joseph J. and Almeda Reese Nickum. Joseph was married to the former Wanda Yarosz. They were married for 66 years. Joseph was a lifelong member of Holy Trinity Polish National Catholic Church.
Following high school, Joseph enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country in World War II. Mr. Nickum earned the rank of Fireman First Class. Joseph was Honorably Discharged on July 16, 1946. Joseph retired after 38 years of service as a Kiln Placer at the former Shenango China Company. He was a member of the local American Legion 343 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 315. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and going to his camp in Tionesta. Joseph also loved gardening and was very active at his church.
In addition to his wife Wanda, he is survived by a son, John Joseph (Patti) Nickum of New Castle; daughter, Susan E. (Anthony) Bartolone of Enon Valley, Pa.; four grandchildren, Kimberly Craver, John Nickum, Nicole Lennox and Anthony Bartolone; nine great-grandchildren, Josef Craver, Willem Craver, Wyatt Craver, Elise Craver, Landon Nickum, Lila Nickum, Lucia Nickum, Joseph Lennox and Julia Lennox.
Mr. Nickum was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Ann Jane Nickum.
Calling hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, April 30, 2017, at the Noga Funeral Home Inc., 1142 S. Mill St., New Castle.
A procession will leave the funeral home Monday at 9:30 a.m. for Holy Trinity Polish National Catholic Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. The Very Rev. Marcel Pytlarz, of Holy Trinity Polish National Catholic Church will officiate. Committal and burial will be in Holy Trinity Polish National Catholic Cemetery.
