La Verne's Story

Text size

La Verne D. Garvin Rich, 92, of Bridgeport, Connecticut, passed away peacefully Wednesday, March 29, 2017, surrounded by loving family and friends.
She was the beloved wife of the late Joseph L. Rich.
La Verne was born in New Castle, a daughter of Robert and La Verne Peyser Garvin.
La Verne had an idyllic childhood raised by her grandparents Robert and Eva in the Garvin home at 323 Highland Ave.
She often recalled her friends, Mary Elizabeth Allen and Jacky Dinsmore, both classmates of hers at the Arthur McGill School. During her years at Arthur McGill, she had as her teacher her Aunt Kate Stockman, who lived two doors down from the Garvin Home and where Aunt Kate took her dinners.
"I had Aunt Kate for not one, but two years at school and saw her each night for meals so that kept me on my toes, " she often told her sons.
Laverne was also a piano student of her Aunt Rebecca Garvin, who maintained a studio on the third floor of 323 Highland Ave.
The Garvin family was very active in the M.E. Church and La Verne's Sundays were pleasantly spent in church services and Sunday school.
As a teenager, La Verne moved to Bridgeport, Connecticut, with her Aunt Rebecca Garvin and graduated from Bassick High School and held a full-time position until she was 80, as manager of temporary personnel placement of Office Services in Trumbull, Connecticut.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her son, John D. Rich.
Survivors include her devoted son, Joseph R. Rich and his wife, Patricia, of Shelton; two cherished grandsons, Joseph P. Rich and his wife, Amber, and Myles S. Rich and his wife, Adrianne; five great-grandchildren, Kaylie, Riley, Lily, Joey Lynn and Amelia; and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the VNS of Oxford for the compassionate care shown to La Verne.
Her ashes are being brought back to New Castle by her family, where they will be interred in Graceland Cemetery, near her beloved grandmother, Eva.
