Mildred (Millie) Burkes


Mildred (Millie) Burkes, 84, of 260 Fording Road, New Castle passed away the afternoon of April 12, 2019, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown, OH. She was born on Dec. 9, 1934, in New Castle, the daughter of the late Nicholas and Anna Pavkovitch. Mildred was married to the late John Edward Burkes, who preceded her in death on Jan. 28, 2007. They were married for 54 years.
Mrs. Burkes will be remembered by her family as a loving mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She also worked outside the home for more than 50 years as a nurse's aide at many of the area nursing homes.
Mildred loved cooking Sunday dinners for her family. She was a big Cleveland Browns fan. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren.
Mildred is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Chris (Gene) Johnson of New Castle; two sons and daughter-in-law, John E. Burkes Jr. and Alan M. (Kathy) Burkes, both of New Castle; a sister, Mary Palmer of New Castle; six grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, John, Mildred was preceded in death by her son, Scott Burkes; two infants at birth; two brothers, George Pakovitch and Sam Pakovitch; a sister, Helen Margel; and grandsons, Michael Mangino and Jacob Zorens.
Visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 17, 2019, at the Noga Funeral Home Inc., 1142 S. Mill St., New Castle. A Celebration of Life Service will be held immediately following visitation. Apostle David Young of Prevailing Word World Outreach Center will officiate.
