Robert L. McElroy, 92, of New Castle passed away the morning of Sunday, Sept. 3, 2017, at Haven Convalescent Home.
Born on March 7, 1925, in York, Alabama, he was a son of the late Henry and Lela McElroy.
On Feb. 1, 1952, he married his beloved wife, the former Lucinda Reed, and the two of them spent 54 years together until she preceded him in death on Jan. 5, 2007.
Robert retired as a steelworker for Youngstown Sheet and Tube after working for 35 years.
He was a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church of Youngstown.
Robert also belonged to the Masonic Lodge of Youngstown.
He loved fishing, hunting and playing bingo.
Robert is survived by his children, Raheema Franklin of Youngstown, Mildred McElroy of New Castle, Edmund McElroy of Youngstown, Robert McElroy of California, Colman McElroy of Maine and James McElroy of Youngstown; brothers, Henry McElroy and James McElroy; sisters, Donni Donaby, Lottie McElroy and Evelyn Andrew; 26 grandchildren; and 38 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his son, Troy McElroy; and sisters, Rosemary Collins, Mary Walker, Ada Artists, Mary A. Washington and Sara L. Lord.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to noon Friday at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory, 941 S. Mill St.
Services will be conducted at noon Friday at the funeral home.
Interment will take place in Tod Homestead Cemetery.
