Salvatore's Story

Salvatore "Sam" Tranquillo, 93, of 461 Thornhill Drive passed away the morning of Friday, Nov. 24, 2017, with his family by his side.
Salvatore was born Feb. 24, 1924, in New Castle. He was a son to the late Guiseppe and Louise Izzo Tranquillo.
He married Lucy A. Micco on Jan. 7, 1989. They were married for 28 years. She survives in New Castle.
Mr. Tranquillo was Roman Catholic and attended St. Vitus Parish. Salvatore was a graduate of New Castle High School, class of 1942. He attended Princeton University while serving in the military.
Salvatore was an avid bowler, enjoyed playing bocce and golf.
He also enjoyed working his daily crossword puzzles.
Following graduation, Salvatore enlisted in the Army on April 30, 1943, at Fort George Meade, Maryland. Mr. Tranquillo earned the rank of technician fourth class with the 556th Signal Depot Company. Salvatore received marksman qualifications with the carbine and rifle. Mr. Tranquillo served his country in the American and Asiatic Pacific theaters. He received many decorations and citations, among them the Good Conduct Medal, Meritorious Unit Award, and World War II Victory Medal. Mr. Tranquillo was honorably discharged on Feb. 24, 1946, at Camp Atterbury, Indiana.
Salvatore retired after 20 year as a foreman at the former B/W Manufacturing. He also worked for Rockwell International Company and the United States Post Office.
In addition to his wife, Lucy, Salvatore is survived by his four stepsons; Robert (Tammy) Micco of Phoenix, Anthony (Peggy) Micco of New Castle, Dominick (Anna Marie) Micco Jr. of Hermitage and Jerry (Cindy) Micco of Gibsonia, Pennsylvania; and several loving nieces and nephews.
Mr. Tranquillo was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Pauline Tranquillo; second wife, Margaret Yargo; daughter, Shirley Curry; two brothers, Carl and James Tranquillo; his sister, Clara Yearage, and stepson, Donald J. Micco.
Calling hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Noga Funeral Home Inc., 1142 S. Mill St. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will perform full military honors for Salvatore at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
A Blessing service will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The Rev. Frank D. Almade, pastor of St. Vitus Parish, will officiate. Entombment will be in Graceland Mausoleum.
