Edith E. 'Red''s Story
Edith E. "Red" Gagliano, 90, of Hillsville passed away on Monday, July 17, 2017, at the Golden Hills Nursing Center in New Castle
Edith (Red) was born in Poland, Ohio, on March 14, 1927, a daughter of the late Howard and Velma Matthews Sloan.
Growing up in the area, "Red" attended and graduated high school, and then met and eventually married James Gagliano, who preceded her in death on Feb. 5, 1974.
"Red" was a devoted wife and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a loving aunt and great-aunt and all who knew her knew of her fierce personality and unstoppable sense of humor.
Of all the things life has to offer, "Red" found the most pleasure in rooting for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Pirates, playing bingo and doing crossword puzzles in ink.
Socially, "Red" was a former Democratic Committeewoman, and a member of the Johnson Club and Bessemer Senior Citizens.
Edith "Red" leaves behind her two sons, James R. Gagliano and his wife, Debby, of Edinburg and Neil T. Gagliano of Hillsville; her grandchildren, Leslie Ann Gonsalvas and Todd Lewis of Poland, Ohio, Greg Gagliano and his wife, Mindy, of Berlin Center, Ohio, and David Gagliano of Hillsville; three great-grandchildren, Allyah Gonsalvas, Wiley Gagliano and Gunnar Gagliano; and two sisters, Velma Phenicie of Edinburg and Worthetta Hunter of New Castle.
"Red" was preceded by her parents, husband and her brother, Howard "Teke" Sloan.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Terry A. Cunningham Funeral Home, 203 Oak St., Bessemer.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with Pastor Sloan officiating.
