George Richard "Dick" Mattocks, 83, of New Castle passed away the morning of Monday, July 17, 2017, at Jameson Care Center.
Born May 26, 1934, in New Castle, he was a son of George A. and Elizabeth Cray Mattocks.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Jessel Mattocks, on April 18, 2007.
A Union High School graduate, Dick received his teaching degree from Slippery Rock University.
He was a teacher with the Laurel Area School District for 30 years, until his retirement in 1992. He also worked at the YMCA as the aquatic director and camp director.
In his spare time, Dick enjoyed fishing, boating and camping. He attended Epworth Methodist Church and St. Jude's Episcopal Church.
He is survived by two daughters, Judith E. Mattocks and Karen S. (William) Brown of New Castle; two sons, Timothy R. (Jackie) Mattocks of New Castle and Luke P. (Kathy) Mattocks of Verona, Pennsylvania; a sister, Joan M. Pickel of New Castle; four grandchildren, Joshua Mattocks, Jessica (Nickolas) Suntheimer, Jeremiah Brown and Kevin Mattocks; and three great-grandchildren, Taylor Stefanyszyn, Ireland Mattocks and Gabriella Suntheimer.
In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Mattocks.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road.
A funeral service will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Castle View Memorial Gardens.
