Harry's Story

Harry D. Herko, 70, of Old Route 18, Wampum (New Beaver Borough), passed away on Sunday, April 16, 2017, at the Butler VA Hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born on Oct. 31, 1946, in Ellwood City, he was a son of the late Herman F. and Leona I. Parish Herko.
He was married for 22 years to Diana L. Rice Herko, who survives.
Harry retired from Babcock and Wilcox, Wallace Run Plant, where he was a conductor. He then worked for the American Asbestos Company.
Harry served with the Marine Corp during the Vietnam War. He served three tours and received the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.
He was a member of the New Castle American Legion and the Ellwood City Hungarian Home.
Harry enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing, especially at Crystal Lake.
In addition to his wife, Diana, survivors include a son, Harry D. Herko Jr. of Pittsburgh; a daughter, Lori (Josh) McWilliams of Butler; a sister, Debi Baldwin of Ellwood City; three brothers, Frank Herko of Ellwood City, Chuck (Cindy) Herko of Las Vegas and John Herko of Frederick, Maryland; four grandchildren and a stepgrandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, David Herko.
Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Marshall Funeral Home, 341 Main St., Wampum.
A funeral service will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Military rites will be conducted by the Veteran Honor Guard.
Memorial contributions may be made to VA Hospice in Butler.
