Joseph J. Daugherty Jr., 90, of New Castle passed away the afternoon of Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2017, at Golden Hill Nursing Home.
Born on Dec. 30, 1926, in New Castle, he was a son of the late Joseph J. Sr. and Katherine Ritchie Daugherty.
Surviving is his beloved wife of 70 years, the former Irene Minteer, whom he married on June 14, 1947.
Joseph began his career on the railroad, working with his grandfather for the Pennsylvania Railroad. He retired as a trainmaster in 1989 from CSX Railroad.
Stationed aboard the USS Holt DE 706, Joseph proudly served as a member of the Navy in the South Pacific during World War II.
Joseph was an avid golfer, golfing in several leagues well into his 70s. Joe also enjoyed bowling with senior leagues and cheering on the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers.
He was proud of his Irish heritage, instilling a love of all things Irish in his children. Joe's quiet strength and "strong like bull" attitude will be forever remembered by his loved ones.
In addition to his wife, Joseph is survived by his children, Sandie Simon and her husband, William, of New Castle, CathyJo Sabol and her husband, Chris, of Pulaski, Joseph Daugherty and his wife, Michelle, of Pulaski, and Dale Daugherty and his companion, Cindy Pagliaroli, of Hermitage; his sisters, Laura Daugherty and her husband, Bernard, and Rose Bayer and her husband, Richard, both of New Castle; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his infant son, Daniel Daugherty.
In keeping with Joseph's wishes, there are no calling hours, and services will be private.
Interment will take place in Parkside Cemetery.
