Ronald's Story

Text size

Ronald P. Bergey, 78, a New Wilmington resident since 1962, passed away the evening of Sept, 8, 2017, at Avalon Nursing Center following a short illness.
Born on Oct. 12, 1938, in Souderton Pa., Ron was the son of Llewellyn D. and Leila (Price) Bergey and the oldest of four children.
After his 1956 graduation from Souderton High School, Ron attended Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pa., where he received a B.S. in Economics in 1960. Ron continued his education at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, where he received a Masters of Business Administration in 1962.
Ron became a Certified Public Accountant in 1969.
For 42 years, Ronald was employed as a professor of accounting at Westminster College until his retirement in 2004. Ronald received the Distinguished Faculty Award in 2004 from Westminster College and was recognized by the Board of Trustees as Professor of Accounting Emeritus for his distinguished career upon his retirement. Ronald also maintained a private accounting practice until 2017, served as a former First Federal Savings and Loan Association board member for many years and held a lifetime membership with the PICPA.
Ronald was a member of the New Wilmington United Methodist Church since 1963 and volunteered his financial management skills to the church and other local nonprofits over his lifetime. After moving to western Pennsylvania, Ron was a dedicated Pittsburgh Pirates fan who always kept up to date with scores, statistics and players.
Some of Ron's favorite pastimes include driving around the local area several times a day to make sure all was well and giving his out-of-town guests motor tours in his car of the surrounding communities. However, Ron's greatest joy in life was to spend time with his grandchildren and children whom he loved dearly.
Ron is survived by his spouse of 57 years Nancy H. Bergey. Together they had the joy of raising two children, a son, Ronald Steven Bergey (Patricia Shea) of Chapel Hill, N.C., and a daughter Rhonda Bergey (Gary Jeffress) of Corpus Christi, Texas. The four other greatest joys in his life included his grandchildren, Laura Jeffress of Sydney, Australia, Katherine Jeffress of Corpus Christi, Colin Bergey of Chapel Hill and Camden Bergey of Chapel Hill. Other survivors include two brothers, Sanford Bergey (Mary Lou) of Pennsburg, Pa., Dennis Bergey (Sara Lynn) of Telford, Pa., and one sister, Brenda Yothers (Abraham) of Telford, Pa.
Ronald was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, Sept. 14, 2017, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Smith Funeral Home in New Wilmington. A Memorial Service will be held at Westminster College chapel on Friday, Sept. 15, 2017, at 1 p.m. with Rev. Lisa Hickman officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Ron Bergey Scholarship Fund at Westminster College, New Wilmington, Pa. 16142 or the Juniata College Scholarship Fund, 1700 Moore St., Huntingdon, Pa. 16652 or the charity of your choice.
