Shirley A. (Nelson) Kirkwood, 78, of New Castle passed away the evening of Saturday, June 3, 2017, at her residence.
Born on Sept. 25, 1938, in Wellsburg, West Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Mendel and Edna Mahan Nelson.
She is survived by her beloved and devoted husband, Carl "Tuff" Kirkwood Sr.
Shirley was a member of the Independent Methodist Church.
She enjoyed canning and making jelly, and she was an avid nature lover.
In addition to her husband, Shirley is survived by her children, Sally (Larry) Wirick, Kathy (William) McDonald, Carl Kirkwood Jr., Edward McDonough, Jeff Kirkwood, Shirley Ann Storm (Brad) Pettry, Renee (Brian) Hall and Sean (Jessica) McDonough; her brother, James (Marilyn) Nelson; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and her dog, Ayla.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward McDonough Sr.; her son, Sgt. James McDonough; seven sisters; five brothers; and two grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory, 941 S. Mill St.
A prayer service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, officiated by the Rev. Frederick Gilbert.
