Shirley Jean Pitzer of Shenango on the Green, formerly of Canfield, Ohio, passed away at UPMC Farrell Hospital at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 14, 2017. She was 85 years old.
She was born in Mercer on Oct. 20, 1931, to Merle and Margaret Blake Brush.
She graduated from Wilmington High School in New Wilmington and from Grace Martin Business School in Pittsburgh. Shirley then worked for the Standard Slag Company and later by Jack Rodgers Lumber Sales. She married William S. Pitzer in 1952, and he passed away on Sept. 1, 2016.
She was a member of the Canfield Presbyterian Church and had served as Trustee and Deacon. She had been involved in Girl Scouts as a young girl and enjoyed being Canfield Neighborhood Chairman in 1973. She had been a former member of Canfield Junior Women's League and was proud to be recognized as Outstanding Member of the Year from 1980-1981. Shirley served as the past Presidents of P.E.O. Chapter E.M., the Canfield Republican Women's Club, and the Red Hat Glad Hatters. She also enjoyed playing bridge and belonged to several bridge clubs over the years.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Survivors include her brother, Robert B. Brush (Dixie) of New Wilmington; several nieces and nephews, Robert M. Brush, Scott Brush, Gale Moore Siddall, Patricia More Slagter, Gary Moore, Russell More, James Pitzer and John Pitzer; brother-in-law, Donald W. Moore; and sister-in-law, Jean M. Pitzer.
Visitation will be held at Smith Funeral Home, 310 W. Neshannock Ave., New Wilmington, on Tuesday, June 20, 2017, from 4 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 7 p.m. with Rev. Larry Cole officiating. Interment will follow at Graceland Cemetery, New Castle. Memorial contributions may be sent to Shenango on the Green, South Market Street, New Wilmington.
