Clarence Arthur Altman, 101, of Harlansburg, Scott Township, New Castle, passed away at Quality Life Services in New Castle on Sunday, April 10, 2022, following a brief illness.

He was born in New Castle on Nov. 23, 1920, to Julian Oscar Altman and Charlotte Allshouse Allman.

Clarence graduated from Harlansburg High School in 1940.

He married Josephine Louise Iorio on March 12, 1946, and she preceded him in death on Dec. 21, 2002.

Clarence was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in World War II and stationed in the European Theatre and Philippines. He served in the front lines, later as a carpenter and after that as an equipment tester for three years earning the rank of Technician Fifty Grade.

He was a life member of the disabled American Veterans Post 112 and the Ellwood City American Legion.

Clarence retired from Shenango China after 42 years of employment, where he worked as a hand dipper and glazer.

He was a member of the Unity Baptist Church in Harlansburg.

He faithfully served his community caring for and managing Unity Baptist Cemetery for many years.

Survivors include his son, Bruce W. and wife, Leah Altman, of New Castle; daughter, Brenda L. Bessell of New Castle; a sister, Shirley M. and husband, Bob Barber of Hermitage, PA; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; grandson, David; son-in-law, Dale; and three brothers, Henry, Ray and Cloyd.

Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 14, 2022, at the Smith Funeral Home, 421 New Castle St. Slippery Rock, with Pastor Mark Dupont presiding.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 14, 2022, at the funeral home.

Interment will be in Unity Baptist Cemetery, Harlansburg.
