Col. James G. Abraham I Obituary

Col. James G. Abraham I (Retired) passed away March 27, 2023. He was 94 years old.

He was born first generation to immigrant parents in New Castle, Pennsylvania.

He met his wife, Jo, at New Castle High School. They have four children, 10 grandchildren and soon to be five great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 12:40 p.m. May 15 the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

His superior work ethic was evident at age 9 when he worked to support his family after his father's passing.

His first passion was always aviation. He learned to fly at age 13, with his instructor trading flying lessons for tending the airport garden.

Through hard work and joining the Marines at an early age, he was able to pursue his education in engineering, which eventually led to his acceptance into the Air Force Cadet program. At age 26, he was recruited into the U-2 program at Groom Lake.

His extremely colorful career eventually led to his assignment here at Nellis AFB, where he was the F-4 Squadron Commander for the 4538th Fighter Weapons School. He was assigned as lead pilot for the U.S.A.F. Thunderbirds, but gallantly refused and elected to go to Vietnam.

During his two tours in Vietnam, he was shot down twice and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Along with the DFC, Col. Abraham valiantly accumulated nine air medals, three commendation medals and four Vietnamese battle stars among many others.

Upon his return to Nellis AFB, he was then in charge of the Red Baron project, which was the development of the lightweight fighter.

For his loyalty to his family, he elected to retire here in Las Vegas and give up his first love of aviation and the Air Force. His strong work ethic and love for his family will always be passed on through generations.

For this sacrifice, we love you and thank you. We say goodbye to one of the last true American heroes.
