New Castle, PA - Conrad John "Connie" Palumbo, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, educator, coach, mentor and community leader, lived a life dedicated to family, faith, education, athletics and helping others reach their full potential.

Born Oct. 27, 1934, in New Castle, Pennsylvania, Connie was the son of the late Alexander and Anna Palladini Palumbo.

A lifelong resident of New Castle and faithful member of St. Vitus Church, he embodied the values of hard work, humility, integrity, and service. Over the course of his life, he became woven into the fabric of the community, earning the respect of generations of students, athletes, families and friends.

On Aug. 20, 1960, Connie married Edith Warren, beginning a loving partnership that spanned more than six decades. Together they raised three children, Robert Palumbo (Erica Soehngen), Cheryl Palumbo DiSanti (Gene) and Roger Palumbo (Kim). Nothing brought him greater joy than his family and his nine grandchildren, Tyler (Dominique), Nicholas (Julianne), Sam, Reid (Natalie), Lexie, Andrew, Lucca, Aidan and Teo.

A gifted athlete from an early age, Connie first made his mark at New Castle High School, where he excelled in multiple sports and established himself as one of the area's outstanding student-athletes. His athletic success, combined with his commitment to academics and leadership, earned him the opportunity to attend Slippery Rock University, where his remarkable collegiate career began.

At Slippery Rock University, Connie became one of the school's greatest all-around athletes. From 1954 to 1957, he earned an extraordinary 11 varsity letters in basketball, football, golf, soccer and track and field. On the basketball court, he scored 1,227 career points and collected 902 rebounds, averaging 18.0 points and 13.3 rebounds per game. He earned All-American honors as a senior, received the University's Outstanding Senior Award in 1957, and was inducted into the Slippery Rock University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1984.

Returning to his hometown, Connie began his career as head basketball coach and physical education teacher at New Castle Senior High School. While respected for his basketball knowledge, he believed coaching was ultimately about building character. Long before the phrase "student-athlete" became commonplace, Connie insisted that students be students first and athletes second. Discipline, integrity, perseverance and academic excellence were values he expected every player to carry into life beyond the game. He often reminded his students and players that character was built by doing the right thing when no one was watching.

His passion for education continued as assistant principal at Ben Franklin Junior High School and later as principal of Shenango High School. He was deeply involved in curriculum development and educational leadership, believing that schools should prepare students not only for careers, but for lives of purpose, responsibility and service. Whether as a coach, teacher or principal, Connie devoted himself to helping young people discover their potential.

His commitment to education is remembered through the Conrad J. Palumbo Leadership Award at Shenango High School, honoring the values he championed throughout his career: integrity, perseverance, responsibility, dedication and service to others.

Connie's contributions to athletics were recognized with induction into the Slippery Rock University Athletic Hall of Fame and the Lawrence County Historical Society Sports Hall of Fame. He was also honored by the Girard School District through the Al Waller Scholarship in Honor of Coach Conrad "Connie" Palumbo, 1958 Basketball Coach, recognizing his lasting impact on generations of student-athletes.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Connie loved golf and treasured the friendships it brought throughout his life. The patience, focus and quiet competitiveness that made him an accomplished golfer were the same qualities that defined him as a husband, father, educator and friend.

Connie will be remembered as a man who believed leadership was an act of service. While his athletic accomplishments brought him well-deserved recognition, he measured success not by championships or awards, but by the character, integrity and accomplishments of the young people he helped shape. His greatest legacy lives on in his family, his former students and athletes, and the community he loved so deeply.

Connie is survived by his beloved wife, Edith; his children, Robert, Cheryl and Roger; and his nine grandchildren. Connie was close with his numerous nieces and nephews, including his niece Mary Lynn Pape, who provided invaluable support in his later years.

In addition to his parents, Connie was preceded in death by his siblings, Mafalda "Muffie" Bucci, Lucie Cubbal, Albert Palumbo, Joseph Palumbo, Dante Palumbo, Albert "Bert" Palumbo, Arlen Palumbo, Arnold Palumbo and Frank Palumbo.

His legacy lives on through the lessons he taught, the lives he inspired, and the example he set for generations to come.

Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Ed & Don DeCarbo Funeral Home & Crematory, 3000 Wilmington Road. Family and Friends will meet at 9 a.m. Saturday for a Mass of Christian burial at Holy Spirit Parish, St. Camillus Church. Entombment will be in Parkside Mausoleum.
