New Castle, PA - Doris Hilda Ambuster, age 99, passed away the morning of Aug. 10, 2025, at Avalon Care Center.

Born Aug. 16, 1925, in Stuttgart, Germany, she was the daughter of the late George and Lena (Mueller) Schlumberger.

On Sept. 30, 1946, she married her beloved husband of 39 years, Sylvester A. Ambuster Jr. He preceded her in death Sept. 25, 1986.

Doris was a graduate of New Castle High School.

She worked as a salesclerk and department store manager for various retail stores in New Castle.

Doris enjoyed reading, line dancing, bingo, slot machines, fishing on Pymatuning Lake with her brothers, and her sweets, especially candy. She attended Prime Timers and Lutheran Woman's Missionary league. Doris was an active member of Christ Lutheran Church for over 77 years. She taught Sunday school and was the former president and vice president of the Ladies Aid Society.

Survivors include three sons, David Ambuster of Madison Heights, Michigan, Randy Ambuster of Elgin, Texas, and Charles Ambuster of Cartersville, Georgia; daughter, Ellen, wife of Dr. James Hower, of Horseshoe Bay, Texas; daughter-in-law, Cindy Ambuster of New Castle, Pennsylvania; former daughter-in-law, Bonnie Bechtol of New

Castle, Pennsylvania; sisters-in-law, Nancy Schlumberger and Carole Schlumberger; Godchild, Patricia Sankey; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Carl Ambuster; three daughters-in-law, Mary Ambuster, Donna Ambuster and Kathy Ambuster; two brothers, Gerhard Schlumberger (wife Emma) and George Schlumberger; and one granddaughter, Tammy Wheeler.

Heartfelt thanks are given to the staff and caregivers of Avalon Place in New Castle, who cared for Doris for eight years, and the many friends who visited her and enlightened her days.

Visitation will be 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, at the Christ Lutheran Church, 1302 E. Washington St., New Castle, PA, 16101.

A funeral service will take place at the church, immediately following visitation at 10:30 a.m., with Pastor James Driskell officiating.

Burial will be at Castle View Cemetery on Aug. 16, her 100th birthday.
