Dorothy B. Raught Obituary

Dorothy B. Raught passed away peacefully with her husband and family members at her side on Friday evening, June 7, 2024, at UPMC Jameson Hospital in New Castle, Pennsylvania.

Born Nov. 4, 1935, in Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of Joseph and Sara Boyle.

She graduated from Temple University School of Pharmacy, followed by graduate studies at Rutgers University.

She enjoyed a rewarding career starting at the Pennsylvania Hospital's Psychiatric Institute in Philadelphia, Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, St. Francis in New Castle and various local facilities as relief pharmacist.

She was an avid reader and joined a number of writing groups, where she enjoyed writing short stories, children's fables and especially Irish tales, which were probably based on stories handed down from her ancestors.

She had a special love for all things science fiction, loved "Star Trek" and frequently attended their national conferences in full costume.

She loved her cats, Zoey and Fred, and tolerated her spouse's rowdy, large Retrievers and Setters.

She became a seasoned world traveler and could be packed in a minute for departure. She especially enjoyed SE Asia, Ireland, Paris, the Galapagos Islands, Egypt and Africa.

A devoted patron of the arts, she rarely missed a performance of the Pittsburgh Ballet and Symphony and especially enjoyed every performance at the Youngstown Playhouse.

Perhaps her greatest skill was not compounding as a pharmacist, but assembling the ingredients for her famous bread pudding in her own kitchen based on a recipe brought through Ellis Island from Ireland by her great-grandmother.

Dorothy leaves behind her a large following of fans, led by her loving husband, Dr. Joseph R. Raught of New Wilmington, Pennsylvania; daughter, Jessica Wood (Steve), Fort Smith, Arkansas; son, Mark Raught (Christa), Seven Valleys, Pennsylvania; daughter, Sara Krepp (Brian), New Wilmington Pennsylvania; daughter, Kathryn Bayuk (Martin), New Wilmington; and her lifelong companion, Alicia Wisswesser, who as a cousin was raised as a sister from birth; a loving congregation at Trinity Church; neighbors and relatives.

Committal and memorial services will be in Mahanoy, Pennsylvania, at a later date.
