New Castle, PA - Edna Eileen Waite McEwen has passed away at the age of 104.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Harold Eugene McEwen (2004); and her parents, Roy Henry Waite (1971) and Ethel Mae Earl Waite (1996).
She is survived by her children, Ardeth Kay Walker (Terry) and Steven Earl McEwen (Donna).
Eileen was the first Lawrence County Girl Scout to receive the Archery Badge and went on to teach archery as a Girl Scout troop leader of Troop 3. She received the Golden Eaglet Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting.
Eileen, a 1938 graduate of New Castle High School, was a lifelong member of First Christian Church. She was a church camp counselor, past president of the Lookout Class, a choir member and church pianist for more that 55 years. She directed and led the junior and interpretive choirs.
As founder and librarian of the church library for 40 years, she was honored by two church and Synagogue Library Associations. Twice she was noted in the Congressional Record and received a resolution from the Lawrence County commissioners for her work.
Eileen was active on the boards of the Christian Woman's Fellowship, Woman's Missionary Society, Church Woman United and Community Church Woman. She was a charter member of the Lawrence County Brotherhood Committee. Eileen received the Rotary Club's "Service Beyond Self" award. She and her family were named the "Church Family of Lawrence County."
Eileen was the past president of the Eastbrook Garden Club and the Garden Council of Lawrence County. She was called "Lawrence County's Mrs. Garden Club." She was a nationally accredited flower show judge for the Federation of State Garden Clubs and worked with the Cascade Park Beautification Committee.
Along with her husband, Eileen was a member of the Clen-Moore Prime Timers, the First Presbyterian Rec Center and the Savannah Methodist Over 55 Club.
Before and after Eileen retired from the Bureau of Vital Statistics, she and her husband traveled extensively in the U.S. and Europe, visiting The Netherlands, Germany, France, England and Wales. While in Scotland, they traveled to the McEwen clan lands in Otter Ferry on Loch Fyne. A parcel of land in Scotland was purchased and dedicated in Eileen's name. She received a proclamation of the purchase and was awarded the title of "Lady Eileen McEwen" in perpetuity.
A memorial service for Eileen will be held at a later date.
