Volant - G. Ferne Layton, of Fayette Neshannock Falls Road, Volant, Pennsylvania, passed away at her residence May 19 2026. She was 92 years.

She was born in Mercer, Pennsylvania, to the late Paul and Alice Orr Stonebraker.

She married Robert Eugene Layton, who preceded her in death 2000.

Ferne was a graduate of Wilmington High School and worked for Westminster College in the bakery department.

She was a member of Lebanon Presbyterian Church, Mercer, Pennsylvania.

Survivors include two sons, Ronald E. Layton of Volant and David A. Layton of New Castle, Pennsylvania. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by seven sisters, Mae Jones, Marie Anderson, Norma Snyderwine, Shirley McConnell, Esther Turney, Phyllis Jones and Carolyn Barber; and five brothers, James, Ralph, Tom, Bill and Herald Stonebraker.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday, May 22, 2026, at the Smith Funeral Home of New Wilmington. There will be a funeral service at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 23, 2026, at Lebanon Presbyterian Church, Route 318, Mercer, PA. Rev. August Hurst will officiate. Interment will be Fair Oaks Cemetery, New Wilmington, Pennsylvania.
