New Wilmington - George M. Romig of New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully Sunday afternoon, Feb. 1, 2026, at UPMC Jameson Hospital in New Castle, surrounded by his loving wife and family.
Born May 30, 1936, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, George was the son of Edmond J. Romig and Ruth (Martin) Romig. To his family, he was lovingly known as "Poppy."
After graduating from Munhall High School in 1954, George attended Grove City College, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics.
He put his love of mathematics to work during a long and distinguished career with the benefits consulting firm William M. Mercer, a subsidiary of Marsh & McLennan. As an Enrolled Actuary, George took great pride in serving his clients by designing pension plans that helped provide secure retirements for countless employees.
Following his retirement, George became a volunteer tax preparer, assisting senior citizens with their tax filings.
George had a lifelong interest in gardening and enjoyed visiting gardens around the world, as well as working in his own garden. He was also an avid woodworker who took pride in tackling many challenging projects.
George was a lifelong train enthusiast who greatly enjoyed traveling with family and friends to ride and explore scenic railroads.
In addition, George enjoyed investing in stocks and always welcomed conversations about new investment strategies.
A longtime member of Trinity Tower United Methodist Church, George was instrumental in establishing a scholarship fund for church members.
George's greatest joy came from caring for his family. His wise counsel was sought by family and friends alike, and he was always ready with a helpful word and a listening ear for anyone in need.
George is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Nancy L. (Byers) Romig, whom he married Aug. 23, 1958, at Rosedale United Methodist Church in Rosedale, Pennsylvania.
He is also survived by his loving children and their families, Steve Romig and his wife, Sue, of Columbus, Ohio, Ken Romig and his wife, Kim, of New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, and Patty (Romig) Pearce and her husband, Rich, of West Kingston, Rhode Island. He is further survived by his brother, Jim Romig of Frisco, Texas.
George was a proud and devoted grandfather to five grandchildren, Beth Youngman, Jessie Romig, Nicole Hunter, Nathan Romig and Keira Pearce; and three great-grandchildren, Deveany Hunter, Maddie Youngman and Shiloh Hunter.

-Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) Research Fund, University of Pittsburgh, P.O. Box 640093, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15264-0093. The PM&R Research Fund is dedicated to restoring health, improving function, reducing pain and enhancing quality of life for individuals with disabilities through research and education.

A memorial service celebrating George's life will be held in May 2026. Further details will be announced at a later date.
