Gerald Nathan Offutt Obituary

Gerald Nathan Offutt of Zelienople, Pa., died on Thursday, March 29, 2018, at Passavant Retirement Community, located in Zelienople.

He was born July 19, 1926, in Plain Grove Township, Lawrence County, Pa., the son of Lester Brown Offutt and Margaret Adeline (Nelson) Offutt.

On Aug. 1, 1946, he was united in marriage to Bernice Laurene Edie, whom preceded Nathan in death on Feb. 6, 2017.

Nathan graduated from Plain Grove High School. Shortly thereafter, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. During World War II, he served as Radarman Third Class aboard the attack cargo ship USS Towner AKA-77 in the western Pacific from the Philippines to Japan and China.

He was manager of the Grove City Agway store until he retired after 30 years of service in 1984.

As a member of the Plain Grove Presbyterian Church, Nathan served as a ruling elder for eight of his 50 years of association with that congregation. He also brought his love of singing to the church choir.

He was a past member of the Tower Presbyterian Church in Grove City, where he served as an elder, deacon and trustee, and the Westminster Presbyterian Church in West Palm Beach, Fla.

As a younger man, Mr. Offutt volunteered his time as Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop 41. He also served on the Grove City Industrial Development Committee.

He was a member of Grove City Masonic Lodge 603, a life member of New Castle Consistory and past member of Zem Zem Shrine, Erie, Pa., and a lifetime member of the American Legion. Nathan was also a past member and president of the Grove City Barbershop Chorus. Other organizations to which he belonged in his lifetime were Plain Grove Sociables and the Grove City Elks Club and West Palm Beach Moose Club.

Mr. Offutt lived in the Passavant Retirement Community in Zelienople. He loved keeping in touch with friends and family on his computer and watching his favorite sports teams on TV.

He is survived by a son, Richard Samuel Offutt and wife Karen, of Slippery Rock, Pa.; two daughters, Susan Lorraine Sanata and husband Lawrence of Delaware, Ohio, and Robyn Lynn Keefer and husband, William Stephen III, of Sewickley, Pa.; four grandsons, Jordan Nathaniel Offutt and Nathan Maxwell Offutt of Pittsburgh, Pa., Michael Lawrence Sanata of Delaware, Ohio, and William Stephen Keefer IV and wife, Linda, of New Castle, Pa.; and one granddaughter, Allison Lynn Keefer of Ross Township, Pa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a sister, Margaret Eliza Jervis; and eldest son, Nathan Edie Offutt.

Visitation for Nathan will be from 4 until 7 p.m. Monday, April 2, 2018, at the Smith Funeral Home, 421 New Castle St., in Slippery Rock, Pa. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 3, at 11 a.m. at the Plain Grove Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. Stanley Keehlwetter, pastor of the Plain Grove Presbyterian Church, presiding.

Interment will follow at the South Plain Grove Cemetery, Plain Grove, Pa.
