Herbert W. Alexander, 81, of 14 Ridgewood Way died at 8:45 a.m. Sept. 11, 2006, in Jameson Hospital. Born March 12, 1925, in New Castle, he was a son of the late Herman E. and Helen G. Dungan Alexander. He was married to Verda L. Blanton Alexander. She survives. Mr. Alexander was a self-employed television repairman, retiring in 1987 from Herb Alexander TV. He was a graduate of New Castle High School and Coyne Electronics Institute in Chicago. Mr. Alexander enjoyed gardening, crossword puzzles, pets and playing harmonica. He attended Challenges, the county's agency on aging center, and took tai chi classes there. Mr. Alexander was a member of First Baptist Church, its Triple M Sunday School Class and its Sparklers Group. In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia L. and Harry Walagura Jr. of New Castle; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Dennis H. Alexander of New Castle, Michael D. Alexander of East Norriton, Pa., and Henry J. and Diana Alexander of Wilmington, Del.; one sister, June Reynolds of Sarasota, Fla.; four grandchildren, Micah C. Allen, Harry Walagura III and his wife, Tori, Andrew Walagura and Stanley Joswick; and one great-granddaughter, Skyler Joswick. He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty McBride. Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow and 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home, 2429 Wilmington Road. A service will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The Rev. John Yergan of First Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Castle View Memorial Gardens.
