John D. "Doc" Docherty, 78, of New Castle passed away early Thursday morning, April 10, 2025, in UPMC Montefiore Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Mr. Docherty was born July 21, 1946, in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, a son of the late Edward F. and Alberta A. (Lynn) Docherty.

A Vietnam veteran, Doc served in the U.S. Army as military police and was stationed in Saigon.

Following his honorable discharge, he enrolled at the Pennsylvania State Police Academy in 1971. Doc served as a state trooper for 25 years and was stationed at the New Castle barracks.

An avid reader, Doc also loved to play golf and spend time with friends at the Elks and Veterans of Foreign Wars, both in New Castle.

His wife of 55 years, Pamela D. (Rice) Docherty, whom he married Aug. 3, 1968, preceded him in death on April 1, 2023.

Doc is survived by a son, Eric Docherty, Harmony, Pennsylvania; a son-in-law, Derek Duffee; and one grandson, Gordon Duffee, both of Grays Lake, Illinois; a sister, Terri Kaufman (Kim), of Boalsburg, Pennsylvania; two brothers, Edward Docherty (Joan) of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvan ia, and Patrick Docherty (Nadine) of Grafton, West Virginia; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, Doc was preceded in death by his daughter, Jill Docherty.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to the ALS Association of Western Pennsylvania, 416 Lincoln Ave, Millvale, PA 15209.

Calling hours will be 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, 2025, in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 111 W. Falls St., New Castle.

Military honors will be rendered at 4 p.m. by the New Castle Area Honor Guard. A religious service will immediately follow, officiated by Rev. David Snyder.

Interment will be at a later date in Richland Cemetery, Johnstown, Pennsylvania.
