Wampum, PA 16157 - Paul Makarevich Sr., 95, of New Castle, passed away peacefully on the afternoon of June 10, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

Born Oct. 31, 1930, in New Castle, Paul was the son of the late Samuel and Pauline (Blaskowski) Makarevich.

On April 25, 1953, he married the love of his life, the former Justine DeCaprio, who preceded him in death Feb. 4, 2017, after nearly 64 wonderful years of marriage.

Paul proudly served his country as a staff sergeant in the United States Air Force during the Korean War era.

Following his military service, he was employed at Republic Steel, and later at Universal Rundle.

He was a member of St. Vitus Church.

An avid outdoorsman, Paul found great joy in hunting and fishing with family and friends. His passion for the outdoors remained strong throughout his life — even at the age of 92, he could still be found riding on the back of the truck helping with fish stocking for the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.

Above all, Paul cherished time spent with his family. His greatest happiness came from being with his granddaughters and his six great-grandchildren.

In his later years, he was lovingly cared for by his son and daughter-in-law, surrounded often by visits from his granddaughters and the laughter of his great-grandchildren. Each of them held a special place in his heart, and he in theirs.

Paul is survived by his son, Paul Makarevich Jr. and his wife, Linda, of New Castle; his sister, Patricia Torsello; his brothers, Peter (Sally) Makarevich and William Makarevich; his grandchildren, Beth Van Gelder and husband, Michael, Emily Miksza and husband, Jacob, Hannah Manilla and husband, Richard, and Tessa Hill and husband, John; and his great-grandchildren, Jocelin, Amelia, Eleanor, Stanley, Gabriel and Justine.

In addition to his parents and beloved wife, Paul was preceded in death by his sisters, Darlene Catarcio, Verna Koch and Florence Walko; and his brothers, Walter Makarevich, Frank Makarevich, Harry Mack, Robert Makarevich and Nick Kiriluk.

Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, June 14, at the Ed & Don DeCarbo Funeral Home & Crematory, 941 S. Mill St. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will perform full military rites at 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. A procession will leave the funeral home at 1:15 p.m. Monday for a Mass of Christian burial at 1:30 p.m. at Holy Spirit Parish, St. Vitus Church. Father Aaron Kriss will officiate. Burial will be in Parkside Cemetery.
