Theodore S. "Ted" Adamczyk, 99, of New Castle passed away Thursday, Dec. 20, 2018, at Orchard Manor in Grove City.
Ted was born on Dec. 3, 1919, near Sharpsville. He was one of 10 children born to John S. and Rose Babski Adamczyk.
He was married to the former Dorothy Strawhecker, who passed in 1991, after 36 years together. He later married the former Eva (Susie) Harding, who also passed after 30 years together in 2015.
He was a 1939 graduate of Shenango High School.
He enlisted in the Army Air Corps shortly after graduation. At the onset of World War II, he departed to the Pacific Campaign as a B-17 crew member with the 19th Bomb Group. He was injured bailing out of his burning bomber, escaping Java just ahead of the advancing Japanese, and then recuperated in Australia. He then served with the 22nd Troop Carrier Squadron in New Guinea and returned home in October 1943 after 22 months of overseas combat. Ted received many awards and citations, among them the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf Clusters and Airman's Medal with Oak Leaf Clusters. He was honorably discharged in October 1945.
Ted spent a few years in civilian life and then re-enlisted in the service in 1947, was discharged in July 1950 after returning from Okinawa, and re-enlisted again the Air Force in 1954, where he continued to serve in interesting places, such as Guam, Japan, Korea and Thailand during the Vietnam War. He retired from the Air Force in 1967, and then joined the United States Postal Service in Slippery Rock, from which he retired in 1982.
He was preceded in death by his son, Theodore S. Adamczyk Jr., and by siblings, Helen Duda, Josephine Pivovar, Bernice Witkowski, Florence Routuno and his brother, John.
Ted is survived by two sons, Michael (Jan) of Franklin, Pennsylvania, and Thomas of New Castle; three daughters, Judith (John) Pierog of Poland Ohio, Lorraine Calabrese of Ambridge and Jeanne (Dale) Rohde of West Pittsburg; two stepsons, Kenneth (Lynne) and Roy (Cheryl) Harding of New Castle; 18 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Ted's sisters, Irene Ryczaj and Jeanne Gawdyda, and brothers, Juliane (Jane) and Max also survive.
Ted, an avid outdoorsman, loved both hunting and fishing. He enjoyed many family vacations at Frasier Lake, Ontario, Canada.
In his later days, he and Susie loved their second home in the Pennsylvania mountains near Sinnemahoning.
Ted was an accomplished blue-grass fiddler, and a charter member of the Alleghany Mountain Old-Time Music Association of Potter County.

Calling hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Noga Funeral Home, 1142 S. Mill St., New Castle.
A procession will leave at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday for St. Joseph the Worker Parish, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. The Rev. Victor Molka, pastoral chaplain of St. Joseph the Worker, will officiate.
Interment will be at S.S. Philip and James Cemetery.
